A perfect way to blend storage and art, these incredibly useful artisan handwoven storage baskets are crafted using natural grasses and thin strips of salvaged plastic from the local prayer mat factory. Great as a planter or for storing and organizing crafts, toys, towels, or anything else your heart desires.

Responsibly sourced and thoughtfully crafted with cattail stalks and recycled salvage plastic by Fair Trade artisans in Senegal. Wolof women in the West African nation of Senegal hand-weave these baskets in the traditional coil weaving method using natural grass. Interweaving colorful strips of plastic, salvaged from a mat factory in Dakar, the weavers brighten up the baskets and create beautiful designs. They are truly a work of art.

"Wolof women take pride in their craftsmanship and ability to help provide for their families using this traditional skill."

Swahili African Modern features modern design through their artisan woven baskets and decor. Their pieces are handcrafted by artisans from the comfort of their villages with locally-harvested, sustainable, natural, and upcycled materials. They are fair trade certified by Fair Trade Federation and pay their artisans well above the living wage. Swahili African Modern helps the women artisans find a more secure market for their products and build greater prosperity in the region.

Home Care: To lightly clean a Senegal basket, simply wipe with a damp cloth to clean the plastic. To reshape a Senegal basket, apply gentle pressure to achieve the desired shape. For example, a large hamper may start to lean slightly over time; you can reshape it by laying the basket on its side, removing the lid, and gently pressing with both hands. We do not recommend wetting or saturating your Senegalese basket. The thick coils of grass are likely to mold before they fully dry.
